Seven Key Things You Need To Buy Before Your New Kitten Comes Home

by Caleb Jackson

Adopting your first kitten is so exciting. Surely, you're awaiting the arrival of your new pet with anticipation and glee. But before your kitty comes home, you need to make a trip to the pet supply store and stock up on a few essentials. Here are the seven key things to make sure you have before your little fur ball arrives.

A Litter Box

Kittens usually feel most comfortable using a litter box without a cover. You don't even have to buy something sold specifically as a litter box. A tote box with low sides will work perfectly fine.

A Pooper Scooper

You can't scoop the litter box without a pooper scooper. Look for one with a sturdy handle so that you can easily hold the end of the handle while you scoop. A good pooper scooper should also have slots that are placed close together so that litter flows through them but kitty waste does not.

Litter

It's definitely worth paying a few dollars more for clumping litter. This type forms clumps when your kitty urinates in it, and you can then scoop out the clumps just like you would pieces of poop. Choose a brand with a mild scent, and overly scented litters can irritate the mucous membranes of young kittens.

Food

Make sure you purchase a kitten-specific food. Look for one that has a meat-based ingredient like chicken or beef as the first ingredient on the list. The pet store employees should be able to recommend a good brand if you're not sure which to buy. If you're on a budget, you do not need to buy the ultra-premium brand, but don't go with the bargain brands, either, as they may not contain the healthiest ingredients.

Food and Water Bowls

While your kitten would be perfectly happy eating out of your dishes, you probably don't want to share! Choose food and water bowls with weighted bottoms so that your playful kitty does not knock them over.

Toys

Kittens are typically quite energetic, and they need a way to occupy themselves. Purchase a couple of different types of toys: a few hard ones to bat around and a few softer ones to snuggle with.

Treats

Kittens might not need treats, but you're going to want to spoil your little one somehow! Look for treats made specifically for young kittens as those intended for older cats may irritate your little one's sensitive digestive tract.
